“Legend on the Bench” – A Seat That Could Save a Life
Caldicot Town Team is proud to be working in partnership with the Legend on the Bench charity and the Spurs Supporters Club to bring a powerful symbol of hope and connection to our town. This is more than just a bench — it’s a message, a statement, and potentially a lifeline. It will serve as a quiet reminder that someone is always listening and that help is never far away. Your donation to our Just Giving Page will help secure a new bench for Caldicot, helping those in crisis with vital support when needed the most.
In the last few months alone, several local people have tragically lost their lives to suicide, leaving heartbreak and unanswered questions in their wake. These devastating losses have shaken our community, and we believe it’s time to act. At Caldicot Town Team, we want to help create a turning point and make a difference to those who need support the most.
Nationally, over 5,000 people die by suicide in the UK each year — that’s around 13 lives lost every single day. Locally, the picture is just as concerning. In Monmouthshire, 15 suicide deaths were registered in 2022 — more than triple the number in 2021 — followed by 13 more in 2023. These are not just statistics. These are neighbours, friends, siblings, and parents. The ripple effects of each loss are felt across families and communities, including our own.
The Legend on the Bench installation will be a safe, peaceful space for reflection, designed to reach those who may be silently struggling. It will be solar-lit at night and feature QR codes and contact details for vital support organisations such as MIND, YoungMinds, Samaritans, and Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide. The aim is simple: to show that there is always someone ready to listen, and always somewhere to turn.
We are currently exploring several locations throughout Caldicot, and we’d really value your input. Help us identify the spots where this bench could have the greatest impact — somewhere calm, accessible, and visible enough to offer a moment of comfort, hope, and connection.

It will also help the Legend on the Bench charity continue their vital work — promoting mental health awareness, offering support to those affected by suicide, and spreading their message to communities across the UK.
